Belgian electroacoustic duo l’eau [LO] brings together Frederik Strobbe on modular synthesizer and Peter Verdonck on saxophone. Their work centres on sustained sound, low frequencies and open improvisation, with acoustic and electronic instruments sharing the same space.
Their October 2026 releases, ebb and flood, approach this relationship through two contrasting sessions. The accompanying project notes describe ebb as three spacious improvisations for modular synthesizer and bass saxophone. flood comprises six improvisations for modular synthesizer and baritone saxophone, with a greater emphasis on density and more restless exchanges.
The tidal theme gives the recordings a shared framework: the withdrawal of water exposes a landscape, while its return fills and transforms it.
Acoustic breath and electronic sound
The instrumentation is central to the project. A sustained electronic tone can continue beyond the length of a human breath. A saxophone tone carries the physical limits and changing pressure of the person producing it.
That difference gives the musicians something concrete to explore. Electronic frequencies can support an acoustic note, obscure its edges or introduce tension around it. The saxophone can respond through changes in pitch, texture and intensity.
According to the duo’s notes, these recordings developed through improvisation without predetermined structures. Their direction depends on how the musicians listen and respond to one another as each session unfolds.
This places l’eau [LO] between several musical traditions. Drone provides an interest in duration and sustained frequencies. Ambient music offers an attention to space and atmosphere. Free improvisation allows the relationship between the instruments to change without a fixed arrangement.
ebb: Space and sustained resonance
The concept behind ebb begins at low tide, when the retreating sea reveals ground that was previously submerged.
The project notes describe three slowly evolving improvisations in which Strobbe’s deep electronic tones meet Verdonck’s extended bass saxophone sounds. Frequencies overlap and separate, with small changes in texture becoming part of the musical development.
The bass saxophone is particularly relevant to this approach. Its low register shares territory with the synthesizer, giving the musicians room to explore the point at which an acoustic resonance becomes difficult to distinguish from an electronic one.
The emphasis is on allowing those relationships time to develop. For listeners drawn to drone and sparse electroacoustic music, this is the most immediately recognisable aspect of the album’s premise.
flood: A denser exchange
flood approaches the same tidal setting as the water returns.
Across six improvisations, Verdonck switches to baritone saxophone. The accompanying description places greater emphasis on active exchanges, interruptions and changes in intensity alongside the sustained electronic material.
The contrast with ebb concerns how the musicians occupy the available space. The first session leaves room around extended tones; the second introduces a more crowded and unsettled interaction.
Free jazz becomes a useful reference here because of the saxophone’s improvisational role and the freedom of the exchange. The electronics remain an equal participant, capable of sustaining, disrupting or redirecting the interaction.
These are qualities that also draw us towards dark ambient and the more experimental edges of jazz. A low saxophone register or a prolonged electronic tone can create atmosphere through its weight, duration and relationship to the surrounding silence.
l’eau [LO] deserves consideration within that wider listening context, while retaining its identity as an electroacoustic improvisation project. The combination of modular synthesis with bass and baritone saxophone gives readers a specific reason to explore it, especially those interested in where drone and improvised music overlap.
